Africa Day 2021 a reflection from Proudly Made in Africa

in Latest News

At Proudly Made in Africa, we are delighted to join the African Community in Ireland, Africa and the Diaspora in other countries to mark and celebrate Africa Day 2021.

Africa Day celebrates the unity and achievements of African countries and people since their victories of independence from colonisation from 1957 onwards.

In the area of business and society where Proudly Made in Africa works with African producers to market their value-added goods internationally, this year is pivotal as it has seen the launch by African countries of Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on the 1st of January 2021.

Proudly Made in Africa’s vision is a world where African communities thrive, trading on equal terms with the rest of the world.  We view AfCFTA as the cornerstone that will build Africa’s common market, fast-tracking its trade development and diversity which will enable its own businesses and people to better capture the value of their resources and sell to the rest of the world.

On a continent of 1.2 billion people (which is set to grow to 2.5 billion by 2050), it is imperative that the 55 countries on the continent can work cohesively together with as few barriers possible.  Enabling seamless intercontinental trade offers the potential for Africa’s manufacturing sector to double in size from $500 billion in 2015 to $1 trillion in 2025, creating 14 million stable jobs.

Enacting this agreement is a milestone of African unity in the journey of political and economic independence as they continue to shake off the legacy of enslavement, colonisation and neo-colonisation through an often exploitative international trade system that still favours former colonial powers over former colonies and people.

We are proud to work with so many excellent producers and support them to grow and bring their wonderful African products not only to their neighbouring countries but to the world at large.
